Do you have a Grinder Pump? If so, please read the following:
During winter storms, some customers may experience power outages. We want to make sure you know how this can affect your wastewater service—specifically if your home uses a grinder pump system.
How a Grinder Pump Works
A grinder pump needs electricity to move wastewater from your home into the sewer system. When the power goes out, the pump cannot run, but your home may continue to maintain water pressure. This means the tank outside your home will continue to fill as water is used indoors.
Why Water Conservation Is Critical During an Outage
If the grinder pump cannot operate, the tank can eventually become full. Once that happens, any additional water entering the system may cause the tank to back up into your home. This can create a health hazard and require emergency service.
To help prevent this, please limit all water use during a power outage, including:
·         Showering or bathing
·         Doing laundry
·         Running dishwashers
·         Flushing toilets (minimize when possible)
·         Any unnecessary indoor water use
This conservation step is one of the most effective ways to protect your home from sewage backups as well as your grinder system until power is restored.
Once Power Returns
The grinder pump will automatically begin working again. It may cycle several times to empty the tank—this is normal.

For ALL customers: Do you know how to prevent pipes from bursting?
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing this weekend and into next week. In anticipation of inclement weather, please consider following these tips to prevent your water pipes from freezing and help avoid any damage to your water pipes:
Shut off and drain any outside faucets.
Install faucet covers on your outdoor spigots for winter freeze protection (Styrofoam covers may be purchased for $3-5 from your local home improvement store).
Leave a drip of water running continuously from at least one faucet within your home preferably the one farthest from the water meter – to help prevent pipes from freezing - there is no need to fully open your faucet.
If you have interior plumbing located on an outside wall, such as a kitchen sink, install heat tape on the pipes running beneath the sink. If no small children are in the house, leave cabinet doors open to allow the warm air in the home to reach the pipes.
If a pipe does freeze and you can locate the frozen area, open a spigot, and use a hand-held hair dryer or heat tape to thaw the area. If this does not resolve the issue, contact a licensed plumber.

Fill bathtubs to flush toilets in case there is a water outage from frozen pipes or a water line break.
If there is a power outage, please conserve water to help maintain pressure in the water system.
