Hello, Team LMOA! We are happy to report that Lake Monticello was spared high winds and severely damaging floods for the most part. The spillway operated as it is designed to work, and the Lake remains at a low level. Please continue reading for LMOA’s official news update: Emergency Procedures: LMOA has protocols for handling severe weather events. The Main Lake is equipped with an automatic spillway that opens wider automatically as lake levels rise. In addition to regulating the water level, it also helps provide a constant flow of water into the Rivanna. There is also a valve located near the Main Dam which can be opened in accordance with state-approved emergency operation procedures in extreme cases. LMOA Staff reviews the Emergency Action Plans regularly and works with our Emergency Management Team - which includes members of Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire & Rescue (LMVFR) - when preparing and responding to weather-related events. Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire & Rescue: We were reminded a little over a week ago how fortunate we are to have the well-equipped LMVFR close by when a car flipped on South Boston Rd. The driver trapped inside the crushed vehicle was reached by Lake Monticello firefighters who used hydraulic extrication tools to cut the vehicle open. The full story can be found on their Facebook Page. Thank you for all you do! Pool Closure (reminder): The Lake Monticello Pool will be closed today, Friday, August 9. LMOA Staff expect to have the pool ready to reopen on Saturday. To be sure, please visit the Pool's Facebook Page for the latest update. First Day of School: The new school year for the Fluvanna County Public Schools begins August 14! Please be aware of children walking to and from the bus stops from about 6 AM - 8:30 AM and from 3 PM - 5 PM. Please be especially careful in the morning when lighting conditions are poor.
