What are your dredging options at Lake Monticello?
Background: Since its establishment in 2009, LMOA’s Dredging Program has played a vital role in maintaining the health of Lake Monticello. Its main purpose is to reduce sediment buildup in Adams, Monroe, Jackson, and Van Buren Coves. Dredging the remaining 44+ coves occurs on a slow schedule, with each full cycle taking about 7 years. As a result, waterfront property owners might wait several years before the dredger reaches them. Alternatively, they can obtain a permit to hire their own contractors, coordinating with Residential Standards and the Army Corps of Engineers.
Due to aging equipment and the upcoming retirement of our Dredge Operator, LMOA has begun exploring alternative options. In 2025, we contracted Harbor Dredge & Dock to support our ongoing in-house dredging efforts. In 2026, LMOA will continue using a hybrid dredging approach, with Harbor Dredge & Dock operating during late winter and early spring for approximately two months when our in-house operator is unavailable. This winter schedule also reduces disruptions to boating and swimming.
New! Third Option: LMOA aims to broaden dredging options for residents, so they can avoid waiting for the in-house dredger or permit approvals. Instead, residents can hire Harbor Dredge & Dock for a reasonable fee. LMOA and Harbor Dredge & Dock will be available at the Town Hall to answer questions regarding pricing, scheduling, and methods.
