Hello Team LMOA!

Last night's board meeting covered a range of updates, including a look at LMOA's reserve funds and how they're managed to support future needs, a Lake health program overview from Facilities & Operations, and a stormwater conservation garden proposal at Tufton Pond from the Wildlife Committee. April Board Meeting Summary
GM Report
At the board meeting, the General Manager's report gave an overview of reserves. It explained that LMOA maintains six reserve accounts, funded through dues or fees, and designated for specific purposes. The funds' money is invested in accordance with the LMOA Investment Policy (PM 4.02Q), with earnings typically retained. Only the Emergency Reserve Account is different, where dividends and interest are transferred to Operations. Every five years, an independent firm performs a community asset study to evaluate the condition, replacement timing, and associated costs. This helps shape funding strategies for reserve accounts to ensure LMOA can afford replacements and unexpected repairs. During the annual budget process, LMOA compares reserve balances with the latest Reserve Study and a 10-year projection. Staff can make adjustments as needs change. F&O Report
Tim Myer, Facilities & Operations Manager, provided a report on 2026 goals as well as an overview of LMOA's lake health program. The full report can be reviewed HERE.

Police Report
Due to an emergency, Chief Jim Mooney and Major David Wells were unable to deliver their reports on the Lake Monticello Police Department and the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office. We are very fortunate to have our own certified police force that works closely with the Sheriff’s department. Thank you to our first responders for your professionalism, dedication, hard work, support, and contributions to Public Safety! The report will be moved to another board meeting.

Conservation Garden
The Wildlife Committee requested Board approval to allocate funds for the design and installation of a native conservation planting project at Tufton Pond to address erosion and stormwater runoff. Though the estimated total cost is $15,000, which includes educational signage, plants, and labor, a grant could result in a maximum reimbursement of $7,000 through the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program (VCAP). The Board gave approval for the Wildlife Committee to engage with vendors to obtain at least 3 different quotes for materials and installation, and to apply for the VCAP grant. Once the quotes are received, a new RP should be presented for Board approval.

Barcode Misuse and E-bike Reminder
The Lake Monticello Police Department has noticed an increase in the misuse of barcodes. As a reminder, LMOA Policy (19.03) states that the holder may not use a barcode to allow any other vehicles to enter Lake Monticello, and barcodes may not be altered in any way from their original condition. Barcodes must be installed on the vehicle by LMOA personnel and may not be altered, defaced, removed, duplicated, or manipulated in any way without the express permission of LMOA. Please understand that abuse of the privilege, rule violations, disregard for the resident properties, LMOA policies, or unauthorized use of the amenities results in withdrawal of privileges with loss of fees. In accordance with policy, the reapplication and reactivation fee of barcodes will be twice the rate. Also, if you are thinking of buying an e-bike, please read this ARTICLE on applicable rules to avoid law violations. Thank you for your compliance.

Our 4th of July Workgroup has been hard at work planning an unforgettable celebration for the USA’s 250th Anniversary, and we can't wait to celebrate with you! We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help bring all the festivities to life. If you’re able to lend a hand for at least two hours at one of the events, please fill out THIS FORM. These celebrations truly wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers!

Events (Watch for June’s Plan Your Month on Monday!)
Bulk Shred
This Saturday, April 25, from 9–11 AM at the Lake Monticello Fire & Rescue station, bring your documents to have them safely shredded while you watch. A suggested $10 donation per box will support the Community Foundation’s projects and local charities. For more details, check out this 2023 video from the Broadcast Committee. PS: GFL picked up 71 tons of bulk trash this week. Thank you, GFL!

Join the Volunteer Water Safety Team
The VWST is looking for water enthusiasts to join its team for the 2026 season. No boating experience is needed, just a positive attitude, a love for summer water activities, and a desire to meet Lake neighbors. If interested, please come to their spring meeting on April 25 at the Ashlawn Clubhouse from 9-11 AM for updates, training, and fun. A light breakfast will be provided by their social committee. Join the LMST Sharks!
The Lake Monticello Swim Team will host its annual registration kick-off this Sunday, April 26, from 1-3 PM in the Ashlawn Clubhouse. Come to sign up and submit registration fees, or just to meet and say hello to teammates! Learn about the swim season and the Little Sharks program, meet the coaches and LMST Board Members, and try on sample swimsuit sizes and styles.

Help Garden with LMBC
You are invited to join the Lake Monticello Beautification Corp (LMBC) volunteers for a spring landscaping, trimming, and weeding “work party” on Monday, April 27 from 9-11 AM. Meet at the Main Beach, end of Ashlawn Blvd. Please contact Alan Aldag at [email protected] with any questions.

Watershed Quality and Ways to Make a Difference
On Thursday, April 30, join the Wildlife Committee at the Ashlawn Clubhouse from 7-8 PM as Rivanna Conservation Alliance (RCA) members Claire Sanderson and Jean Lea present an overview of RCA. They will share their core program areas, water-quality monitoring programs, ways people can get involved with RCA, and how our choices as property owners can impact the watershed and the natural resources around us.

Family Day at the Marina
The Marina is hosting an Open House on Saturday, May 2, from 10 AM - 2 PM. Come out to see what the Marina has to offer! Enjoy kids' activities and games, try some delicious food from ‘In the Cut’ food truck, cool off with an ice pop while you learn about water safety and Personal Flotation Devices, join the LM Fishing Club, and more!

Fluvanna Senior Parade
Line the route on Jefferson Dr. on Sunday, May 3, at 2 PM to cheer on the Fluvanna County graduating Seniors! All seniors who live in Fluvanna County and/or attend Fluvanna County High School are welcome and encouraged to participate. Participants should line up on Edgewater Drive. The organizers are still in need of a few volunteers to help with directing traffic and lining up. If you are interested in helping, text Jen Sample at 434-989-9246.

Water Safety Tip of the Week

Did you know that you (the owner of a boat and LMOA member) are responsible for all operations and actions of your boat, regardless of who is operating it? Please make sure that anyone borrowing your boat understands VA Safe Boating Laws and specific rules of Lake Monticello. Please see LMOA Policy 6.04 and the Safe Boating section of the VA Department of Wildlife Resources website for more information.

Sneaker Drive
The Fluvanna County High School (FCHS) PTSO is hosting a community-wide sneaker donation fundraiser aimed at reducing landfill waste while raising funds to support students and teachers. Donation bins are conveniently located at Fluvanna County High School for students and EW Thomas Grocery Store in Palmyra, VA, for all other community members. The PTSO will be accepting sneaker donations through mid-May. For more information, please contact the FCHS PTSO at [email protected].
