Hello, Team LMOA! Please continue reading for an update on official LMOA news, community activities, and volunteer work opportunities! NEWS Town Hall Meeting: If you missed the Town Hall Meeting on February 6, please watch the recording HERE. At the gathering on Tuesday night, LMOA shared a summary of the 10-Year Outlook, some survey results, and other information regarding the necessity of a dues increase. The panel also answered questions from the audience and accepted comments. All speakers who approached the podium said to be in favor of a dues increase. The Board of Directors will consider all feedback when preparing for the next Town Hall Meeting on February 28 at 6 PM in the Fairway Clubhouse. As requested by the audience, our Directors plan to share a first draft of the dues increase proposal and clarification on which actions will need to take place if a dues increase does not pass. We encourage residents to take the survey before it closes at noon on February 14, 2024. Trash & Recycling Facts: Did you know having your HOA organize trash pickup has its advantages? Because of our size, we can negotiate a good rate and minimize traffic within the Lake. For example, when GFL wanted to raise the price by 21% in 2021, LMOA was able to lower the price hike to 9% by negotiating a 5-year contract. This service is part of the Improved Property Fee, which is the cost of trash and storm recovery divided equally among improved property owners (it is separate from your annual dues). Our Members with improved properties (a lot with a house) pay only $20.31 a month per household for trash and recycling pickup compared to $27-50 a month in neighboring HOAs. LMOA has looked into other services, as suggested by our residents, but found that GFL was both cost-effective and well-equipped to handle a community as large as Lake Monticello. Residents who have extra trashcans or irregular bulk trash pickups have contacted GFL directly and paid separately for these extra services. If it were up to our residents to organize trash pickup, we would see multiple companies running routes on multiple days. Not only would that increase traffic and the wear and tear of our roads, but the fees could also be much higher because you lose the advantage of a group discount. New F&B Model Reminder: The Board of Directors has agreed to lease The Pub to RocDun Hospitality LLC, a new Food & Beverage (F&B) company owned by Lakers Jacie Dunkle and Sam Rochester. This is a step to eliminating an annual $325K loss in F&B by 2025. Troon's last day providing F&B service is expected to be Sunday, February 25. The Pub will be closed for a few weeks while RocDun gears up for reopening around March 12. The lessee will be running the F&B service moving forward and will post more information about their plans soon. Candidate Petition Packets: Six members have picked up a Candidate Petition Packet in an effort to fill two board openings. There is still time to pick up a packet at the Ashlawn Clubhouse if you would like to run for the board. You will need to collect 150 signatures from Members in Good Standing by March 25, 2024. Instructions are in the packet, but our staff is happy to answer all of your questions. FUN Free Movie Night! The Young Residents and Families (YRF) Committee is holding a fun family-friendly event at The Fairway Clubhouse (51 Bunker Blvd) this Saturday. They will be showing a Disney movie, offering hot chocolate along with various arts and crafts for kiddos to do while enjoying the film - all for free! We hope to see you there at 6 PM! Ladies Golf Breakfast: The Lake Monticello Ladies Golf Association would like to invite the women of the Lake to join them for a new season of golf! Their Kick-off Breakfast is on Thursday, March 14th from 9:30 to noon at the Ashlawn Clubhouse in Terrace Rooms A & B. Summer Camps & Activities: The Lake Monticello Golf Club will have information about its summer program for kids at the Fluvanna County High School on March 21 from 5:30 - 8 PM. The public schools in partnership with various parent groups, are working to organize ‘Fluco Fest, a Spring into Summer Showcase’. This will be an evening drop-in event for Fluvanna families with an emphasis on sharing resources as well as highlighting outside-of-school summer programming and activities that are available in our area. They will have several local camps and organizations that provide summer programming as well as local community resource providers at the event. Dinner will be provided for all attendees. Please read the flyer HERE for information on how to RSVP. Mediterranean Food Workshop: Join Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Cynthia Moore for a nutrition tune-up. Cynthia and the Hygeia Wellness Park will offer a free program called “Mediterranean Winter Foods and Mood” on February 17 from 3-4:15 PM at the Ashlawn Clubhouse, Terrace Room B. Cynthia plans to answer the question of whether fruits and vegetables influence happiness. “Recipes will include beans, greens and quick-fix foods to keep you vibrant,” she says. Newcomers and Old Friends: The February monthly meeting of this club has been canceled. VOLUNTEER CORNER There are so many volunteer opportunities in Fluvanna County! If you would like one to be highlighted in the GM Corner, please email details to Marieke Henry mhenrylmoa@org. This week, the spotlight is on LMBC and Big Brothers and Big Sisters: Fluvanna County is getting a Big Brothers Big Sisters program! For just a couple of hours a week, you can give a “Little” the invaluable gift of your friendship. By simply changing their perspective of what the world can offer, you can start changing their life. It’s as simple as passing a football at the park, going to a museum, or just hanging out together. Volunteer registration is open at https://www.blueridgebigs.org/become-a-big. You will need to have your valid driver’s license and social security number at hand as the organization runs an extensive background check on applicants. Lake Monticello Beautification Corps (LMBC) is in dire need of new members. Gardening with a great group of neighbors offers outdoor activity as well as friendship! The group that maintains LMOA’s common garden spaces plans to donate park and beach benches to the community in the spring, but it needs to discontinue its phonebook fundraiser due to low sales. LMBC would like to continue the Holiday Home Tour and raffle if it can find residents who want to show off their decorated homes in December. Please contact Helen Schoene at [email protected] if you would like to join LMBC, have a suggestion for a more effective fundraiser, or would like to offer up your home for the Holiday Home Tour! Have a great weekend! -Tom Schauder General Manager
